"Do they put on un-paid benefit concerts to raise funds? Do they do community outreach concerts at little or no cost to raise awareness? Or do they expect to be paid for all services?"

David,

Scheduling a bunch of un-paid work simply amounts to a pay-cut.

Of course, if folks who work in automobile factories agreed to build a bunch of cars for free for outreach and public awareness, their auto manufacturer employers were be more solvent financially.

The word "professional" means "paid" (for everything). Nothing more or less. "Professional" and "enthusiast" need to be kept separate.

"Outreach"/"publicity"/"promotional" performances should be paid for by those who regularly donate to orchestras' budgets, and not by the $2X,XXX - $4X,XXX per year professionals.
