I also played this piece last year, and the lip slurs really make-or-brake the it. Yes they will get on your nerves, but trying to sound like a horn will as well. Next to the Gregson Tuba Concerto, and Cappriccio by Penderecki, this is one of my favorite solos to play.

Also the Denny Brain recording is the best that I have found.
