Dan,

I just did this piece last year for NY All-State. Great piece, but after awile it begins to wear on you. Get the Denny Brain Recording and live it, but don't forget scale practice and sight reading practice. A few things to remember : Keep it light! Romanze - The ascending lines should be like flowers opening at the top and there are a few high Bb's 2 before C that should have a "peckish" horn sound. At C, very small sforzandos. Rondo - Very regal and HUGE breaths of air when you can. 3 after F a small ritard and then an accelerando to "a tempo" in 4 after F is very appropriate because it is the last time the theme is introduced. No ritard at the end of either movement. This piece was written for a natural horn, so you'll probably notice many of the same notes, so when you see an accidental make the note speak, almost rub against the others for color. And most of all, have fun! Best of Luck!

Ryan

PS Lip slurs everynight for as long as you can take it, you'll need it.
