I yet have to see the first gig bag without any metal parts on the outside. If these do not put dings in the bell, then they might scratch the inside of the bell.

On the original posting I might suggest this:

If there is a good seamstress in the house, a solution might be this one:

Make a two-layer pull-string-purse of the right size in a soft and strong fabric. The synthetic velvet/felt, that Reunion Blues uses to line its gig bags might give you an idea of the right quality.

Between the two layers of fabric you could put a safety layer of soft foam of an adequate strength. Make sure to stitch or glue the foam sheet together where the sides of the fold meet, so that the foam lining forms a pouch in its own right. The edges of the foam lining should be stitched to the fabric not too far from the string channel, so that the protective effect does not creep away.
