Tony & Dale,

I think the reason they don't put another few hundred into the horn is that even a 10% increase in price would lose them MANY sales to the school market. You will not get the funding authorities in a school system to look at solder joints and lacquer runs. They want to see a dollar figure, and that's really just about ALL they care about. So, if they raise the price $300, they lose a bunch of sales. Of course, if they lose a bunch of sales (lower volume) they have to raise the price (higher margin). So now, instead of $300 difference, it's $600. Oops, just lost MORE school sales, margin goes up again, so now it's $1000 more. Might as well buy the Conn.

I think what the broader non-school King-buying community needs to do is to push for a 'pro' model, featuring better workmanship and a higher price tag, or push for a BBb Conn 53J/57J (to make up numbers). Either way, leave the standard model King, and its price tag, alone. Heck, most school tubas will wind up dropping the bottom bow soon enough, right? Then the original fit & finish is no longer such a big deal!

Joe Baker, who sees how a small price increase can become a large one.
