I don’t mind playing cimbasso when conductors ask for it. When the LAPO performs any Verdi the music library always checks with the conductor ahead of time to find his preferences. We performed the Requiem in December and Zubin Mehta asked for tuba. Two years ago Mark Elder wanted cimbasso. So far it has been 60/40 in favor of the tuba.

If requested I borrow a great Rudy f cimbasso from Tommy Johnson and “audition” mouthpieces for the trombone players. I want to sound like a big trombone not a trombuba! Of course Ralph did send me this note…hmm

In any case I like to think that it sounds at least 20% better than the tuba (ca-ching) since the cimbasso is paid as a double.
