Thanks Norm, some of us needed that. It may very well be that Verdi specified the cimbasso, not because he didn't like the tuba, but because he didn't like the tuba playing he heard. On at least three occasions, I've beens hired by small opera companies with (25-piece reduced orchestras-usually without tuba) to play Verdi (Nabucco, Ballo, and Rigoletto) because the conductor wanted the sound of the tuba. I actually think that the tuba would the wrong color for Otello and Falstaff, but the answer is not cimbasso, it's 4 trombones. I once heard Arnold Jacobs perform Verdi's Overture to Battaglia de Legnano. I hope it drops on your stand one day if it hasn't already. I can't imagine that on anything but a tuba.
