Yes. We ought not chide composers for not having the gumption or imagination. Their concept is their concept.
One the one hand everything I play in the orchestra is a "solo" since I am the only one making a tuba sound. BUT in reality I essentially agree with "No Sow Lo" that we are "gilding the lily" a bit here and there with what we're calling solos.
A great list of works to be aquainted with, for sure (in this thread). But I can hear the woodwind and string players at the banquet tittering as we scrabble for the food scraps under the table.
