Hey folks! First time posting but longtime reader! I have a question for the readership.
We all know that larger horns are preferred in an orchestral situation for most works. In fact, it seems one is at a disadvantage at an orchestral audition if (s)he doesn't show up with at least a 5/4 or larger. I am also aware that some auditioners use a smaller horn for the first round, then switch to a larger horn if they make it on.
My question: do military band auditioners look and listen for the same types of things? If I walk into a military band audition sounding great on, say, a CB50, will I be at a disadvantage to someone who sounds great on a PT6 all things being equal? Do the military bands look for the presence of a certain concept of sound or are they simply looking for the best player?
This has relevance for me shortly so I appreciate your replies! You don't have to be a tuba player either to input (read: Farah). Thanks again for the delicious forum!
