I played both a YEB 321 and a HB 2P at the Marine Band audition in 1989. For the typical low register stuff I used the 'Brunner. For all the technical excerpts, I used the YEB 321. Times have changed a lot since that audition, but I think great sound, VERY good time and rhythm, good intonation and good sight reading are still at the root of what the bands are looking for...good musicianship being a bonus if it occurs.

I think most auditioners would be surprised at how few auditioners actually just cover the basic attributes I listed above. I have been on audition committees and competition juries and usually the top folks are the ones that do the basic things well.
