In addition to the 1966 restoration of Orchestra Hall that Richard brought up, Nevsky used a choir and microphones were placed behind the orchestra to pick up the choir. Jacobs was picked up by those choir mikes. These are the reasons his sound is different from others of the era.

For another major difference, listen to Tchaikowsy #6 with Reiner. Arnold used the 6 valve horn Reiner found in Vienna.
