Great comments....I had an experience where I was standing behind the low brass section of one of the better American orchetras and was appalled at first how raucouys it sounded. But, like Sean, I found that the projection was phenomenal and sounded big and huge out in the hall.

Something you might try is to take 5 minutes or so at the end of a practice session and play basic simple etudes at an all out FFF. Push the envelope...ALLOW it to sound bad. The lips need time to learn how to adapt to those playing conditions just like in learning to play high or low or anything else. You will find that over time, you will be able to maintain a good sound at a higher dynamic level. But be sure that you do this exercise at the END of your session.
