I agree more with Bryan. I have never taken an aggressive stance from a business standpoint towards students. It's a good way to slit your musical throat (if you will) in your particular area. More than likely, if you yourself are an eternal student of the tuba, you will have come into contact with other area teachers. Get to know them personally rather than spy on their teaching "deficiencies". Take lessons from them yourself. Most often than not, these preexisting teachers will refer you to students or area band directors that they may not have time for, and you can build a studio that way.

Word has a way of getting around if you are a particularly strong, inspiring teacher or offer a highly competitive price. There's no need for you to steal students. Be a motiviated and exciting teacher who knows his/her subject and the students will follow.

A good way to get your name around is do some local recitals (a positive experience no matter what your intent!). In other words, let your playing and teaching do the talking. Leave the cutthroat tactics to other professions. :)
