I've an opportunity to buy an Alexander tuba. It is a 5/4 horn, and has four rotary valves. It is unlaquered...raw brass, I believe. It has been played with the New World Symphony. I was wondering what the general consensus is as to the aural and physical qualities of Alexander tubas. Are they still made? Who played/plays them? Can anyone throw out some names of players who have made it without a fifth valve?
