I don't think you can tell which mouthpiece is "right" without an extensive home trial. But I do think you can tell that a mouthpiece is "wrong" immediatly. So, ideally you could narrow the field at the music store & make your final selection after the home trial. A/B comparisons are tricky, you need to play on each mouthpiece long enough to "adapt"to it. Exactly how long that is probably varies from person to person. Use your tape recorder to give you another perspective!
