Trying New Mouthpieces

When trying new mouthpiece(s), how much playing time should you give each one before determining whether you like it or not? Is an immediate impression valid, or do you need to consider how the mouthpiece feels/speaks/sounds after lengthy playing? Assuming that you use your own horn, or one with which you are VERY familiar, is there any value in trying different mouthpieces at vendor displays and showrooms? Or is the "home trial" the only way to truly evaluate a mouthpiece?
