Well, you're on the right track.
Get to know some local pros, and get their opinion. You really need a tuba teacher to help lead you in the right direction with your choices with literature. Working on your high range is all fine and dandy, but I think any real assessment of your abilities cannot be made until someone sits and hears what you've got.
