I know a guy who uses a 5-rotor F tuba (fairly large) for everything. He really makes it sound awful in the concert band. An F tuba can sound gorgeous when played well above the staff, but most band music is below the staff; it's difficult to get a good band sound down there on an F.
K. Vinal Smith used an F tuba for everything in the Boston Symphony. I saw him several times with that orchestra, but never heard a note.
