The first time I recorded myself was on a Radio Shack cassette walkman with a built-in stereo microphone and a speaker on the back.

After the first "take", I played it back, and was amazed at my lack of tempo control, my sound variations, my pitch waver (not due to the tape... this followed my rhythm, not the cassette spool's), and a whole bunch of other junk that I hadn't been aware of.

I'm willing to bet that you'll be able to hear over 90% of your performance problems by recording with cheap equipment. Plus, when you can sound good on something like that, you'll be playing very, very well indeed.
