I love Jacobs' visualization of dynamics using bowed instruments as the model. If a string player needs to play louder, the bow has to move faster. There's no other way to play louder. Using a wider bow, like a cello bow, will not really change the volume of a violin.

Same way with air, speeding up the air increases the amplitude of the lips vibration making the sound louder. It's the only way.

Playing with a more centered sound may increase the efficiency of your playing and make you louder, but once the embouchure is working with reasonable efficiency, dynamics depend on air speed.

There are more scientific ways to explain the phenomonon but this is a good starting point for understanding.
