I don't find this curious. It seems perfectly natural to me. The requirements for these two jobs are quite different. Each one requires that you be "barely adequate" in the skills required for the other job, and "excellent-to-world-class" in the skills specific to that job.

Orchestra musicians do not need to write papers, lecture students, or administer an academic department.

College professors do not need to fill the hall with beautiful tone, blazing technique, etc.

Both jobs require a fair amount of skill in petty politics.
