Well, I recorded last night trying a few different things (mic to minidisc with manual gain control and mic to mixer to minidisc w/ automatic gain and with manual gain). I ended up using automatic gain on the minidisc and running the mic through the mixer. Rick, my minidisc also makes me reset it to manual everytime I want to record, I think it is good I bought the mixer, at least so I don't have to keep doing that! I kept my levels below 0 db and it sounds pretty good...other than the damned traffic on the street outside but nobody asked me about sound proofing when they designed the building.
The XLR adaptor does change the impedence, High Z thingy you guys were talking about. Thank you guys so much for all of your help, the recording sounds really good. I've got some tinkering to do before I record again, but I'm getting closer to a really great recording.
