Getting a string specialist unfortunately doesn't relieve you of any due dilligence research. I took my bass to a professional cellist who was referred in glowing terms to me--by another cellist. First thing the guy wanted to do was to sand the fingerboard so that it was flat as a Kansas prairie--he kept talking about the "warp" in my fingerboard. I let him adjust my bridge, with the net result that I couldn't bow the D string without also hitting the A string. I ended up replacing the bridge.

I'm sure the guy is a whiz on celli and maybe on those other weird strung instruments that tune in fifths, but he'll never touch my bass again.
