I have been studying this piece for a few months (yay college auditions), and just make sure that the short notes pop out just as much as the long ones. One thing my teacher hounded me about was that it always sounded like I landed on the long notes and wouldn't let go. This goes for every piece, though. In terms of just that piece, just play charactaristic tuba. Take every stereotype anyone has about the tuba and play it with that mentality.
