why do you say mutes are awful? If you have a good one, that works well with your horn, and they can be fun to use. My mute does not change the response or intonation of my horn, but gives it an edgy, metalic sound that is sometimes a nice change of pace. If you want an example of mute heaven, play a besson Euph with a Denis wick straight mute. That is about the same feeling as my Piggy with a H+B large aluminum mute.
The bad ones are awful, but the great ones are fun. Maybe you need to find a better mute before you condemn them all.
