I think a mellophone's tubing length is an octave shorter than a french horn. So, if the tubing was the same length as an alto horn, I think what you had was a mellophone. But if it was the same length as an F horn, I think it might have been an old military single F piston horn, some of which played quite well from what I've read. I don't know whether they were right or left-handed horns, but they looked as you describe.
