The best-playing example of this sort of horn I've encountered was a mid' '30's Conn, which was a mellophone in pristine condition. One could adjust the slides and move a switch rotor, and play it either in Eb or F. It played quite well, and when a horn student at the Armed Forces School of Music broke her left wrist, she played this instrument right-handed. With her left hand and cast in the bell, she passed all auditions, finishing the course.
