I can understand what you are saying but I want to comment a little differently. I have said before that I had the great fortune of studying with Jake in the mid-70's. His teaching was wonderful always based on making music.
Just this Christmas I received the Portrait of an Artist. Some was good some was ok but then I heard the cut of him playing the Dies Irae from Symphonie Fantastique. It actually brought tears to my eyes. The clarity and centeredness of the pitch on that particular track was the sound he was trying to instill in my playing. It made me realize "the music" that he so strongly wanted me to strive for. It is a sound that I still am attempting to achieve. Mr. Jacobs was a rock of a tuba player. When I listen to the Gabrielli recording w/ Philly and Cleveland I know his playing.

I don't think he can be judged solely by recordings. Personally, he is judged by the ways he worked with me and the aural vision of what tuba playing should be.
