John Mueller, who just retired from one of the D.C. service bands (you know, in his early 40's as they do), was just hired as the TROMBONE professor at the University of Memphis. (He teaches no euphonium students.)

Why not let your student play a valve trombone (for now) with a 6-1/2AL? The rim is almost identical to a 51D (Is that what he's using?) and he won't have to spend practice time away from the euphonium right now learning slide positions. P.S. The best valve trombone that I've ever played (I own one.) is an old F.E. OLDS made in California.

Finally, over all other things your student should do exactly as you suggest.
