The appropriate tuning slide length depends on the player. For some people the slide that came with the horn might be perfect. I was told by at least one person that the better the player the "flater" the player plays, therefore requiring a shorter slide. I can attest to the fact that the more practicing I do the more the main slide has to be moved in to play in tune.

This is a good warning for anyone though, definitely use a tuner when trying out a tuba. Not just to check the fundamentals, but to check intonation throughout your range.

As to the original question, the Mirafone 191 is a better tuba in my opinion. It is sturdier, more consistent, and has a cleaner sound. The Cerveny is a good tuba for a little less money, but if you have the extra $$ I think the Mirafone would be worth it.
