Obviously a contrabass trombone would be ultimately homogeneous in blending with the low brass section, but a trombone has a totally different sound than a tuba, especially since it isn't a conical instrument like the tuba. The tuba lays better in terms of foundation for the orchestra than a contrabass trombone would anyways. Also, I would disagree with the statement assuming that "(t)he CC tuba has a more compact tone than a BBb." I guarantee that if you were blind folded and Gene Pokorny played for you an excert on his York CC and then turned around and played the same excerpt on a Wilson 3100S 5/4 BBb you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in tone. The difference between BBb and CC tubas is a whole-step in the key of the instrument, not the tone or the sound it produces.
