I have a short REAL rubber garden hose with a cut-off bare rubber end coming out of an old-fashioned janitor faucet (hose fitting) into a bathtub. I turn on the hot water and "jet" it through the slide tubes and casings AFTER scrubbing carefully with the appropriate diameter brush that I bought from a band instrument repair supply place.

If you had this entire set-up and used a plastic (instead of real rubber) garden hose, the brass threaded end would turn loose from the hose after a minute or so of hot water running through it.

Some of the stuff that some of us repair guys have devised to use as "tools" isn't that "weird", but just inconvenient for a one-time home application.
