You could probably build your own case comparable to that of Walt Johnson, but consider that you'll have to fool with polyester resin and fiberglass or kevlar mat, which are both pretty nasty (one has toxic fumes; the other has nasty little fibers that can get into your lungs if you don't wear the proper protective equipment). And you'll need to construct a form on which to lay up the construction. For details, ask someone who builds fiberglass boats or ultralight planes.

You certainly could save some money if you value your time at nothing; but I'd rather spend the time playing or hiking. For $800 or so, the Walt Johnson case is really a very good deal.
