I had that done on my Rudy the last time it was overhauled. The Nickel-Silver plates that were on the top and bottom bows were very dented and would have been exceptionally hard to straighten and then reattach so the repairman just removed them and then soldered on a wider hollow half wire along the center of the outside of the curve. To be honest, I didn't notice any difference in sound on mine but it isn't a huge horn so maybe the top and bottom bows weren't resonating all the much to begin with. I've been toying with the idea of putting on a couple of other strips of this wire to help protect the bottom bow (parallel with the center wire but 1" to 2" away from it on either side) but haven't gotten around to it. Do you think I could expect the same results as if I padded the bottom bow? It certainly seems a logical conclusion but I'd be curious to find out...
