I will have to second Joe on this one. Once, I tried several different ways to protect the bottom bow on a horn that had nothing but a wire soldered on the bottom. They all hurt the sound, but the worst was when I wrapped the entire bottom bow with heavy black electrical tape. The tuba sounded HORRIBLE - deader than dead. I'll just stick with horns like Mirafones where they have a large sheet of nickel silver protecting the bottom of the bottom bow. It doesn't seem to kill the sound and is better (though not a lot) than nothing. It also looks attractive contrasting the lacquered brass. Has anyone every tried unsoldering the protective pieces off a horn and see how it sounds? I am guessing that the horn would become more live and maybe even too brassy? Love to find out, don't plan on trying that one myself.
