I was looking through the fingering charts in Donald Knaub's Modern Techniques for Tuba. On the five-valve page he states that the fifth valve fingerings have limited usage in orchestral playing. As a long time four valve BBb player with no orchestra experience I don't have a clue if this is true.
So, what do you think, five valve guys? Do you use it much? Is it used in fast runs? Just sustained tones? It's mostly wasted hardware?
