I think you're right on the maintenance issue with "cheap" widgets, cars or tubas. If something is cheap and thought little of, then it is also easily abused.
I was thinking back about my comments on Amati's "falling apart". They don't really "fall apart" if they are indeed well kept. I am yet to see one of these "cheap" tubas which are more than 4-5 years old which are not in a desperate state of disrepair. This is indeed more a factor of abuse than poor assembly, I suppose. I find it difficult to justify the purchase of a 3 valve upright Amati BBb for $1600 or $2700 for a 4 valve Amati, when it is almost certain that the individual will be more content with other options. It is possible, I suppose, that someone out there really loves their Amati more than any other horn in the same price range, but I am suspicious.
