Simply put, I believe that percentage-wise, more people who chose to switch to CC become better players than (percentage-wise) those who just think about it and stick to BBflat.
The most "politically correct" way to characterize this observation is something "naysayers" cannot disagree with: "It has nothing to do with the horn and has everything to do with the player." THIS writer has little respect for such "p.c." (read useless) statements. It IS interesting that many folks who switched to CC seem to favour the response of the smaller, shorter horn. Something in your post was also interesting ... do you really consider 2 feet of pipe a "small difference"?
