Kenneth, you might wish to go for the gusto. The hand-worn eaten-into spots are usually the toughest. If you can get a good angle on it (without accidentally hitting other surfaces in the proximity) you might want to get after that eaten-into place with some cloth-backed Blue Grit Utility Cloth (3M, etc.) I use a 220 grit, and tear the strips narrower than they come out of the dispenser. Once you've sanded out the wear, go back with 600 grit PAPER (until you can NO LONGER SEE ANY of the 220 grit emory cloth marks) and finally 1500 grit PAPER (until it almost resembles a buffed surface. You can either plate the 1500 grit surface (if you're satified with it) or further polish it with Brasso and a stiff rag. Of course, you'll have to COMPLETELY remove the Brasso prior to your "plating".

Finally, since the silver plating that is being applied is obviously cheesy, you might consider applying a clear coat of lacquer over that one spot...(??)
