I had a similar experience in High School - I had a 3-valve bell-front Conn Baritone, and a putz who could barely play convinced his parents to buy him a silver-plated Besson Sovereign Euphonium. It drove me almost completely nuts (those who know me think I haven't fully recovered). Somehow, I got over it - thankfully before I went to college.
Don't get me wrong, I can sympathize with players and educators who are frustrated with limited budgets and crumbling equipment. But remember why you are a musician - why you play and/or teach others - if it isn't fun and rewarding (despite what stupid things other people do), maybe you should do something else.
I ended up doing something else (for the money, ironically) but keep teaching music and playing on the side, and having way way too much fun.
For what it's worth.
