On amateur orchestras...in my opinion you generally find a wide range of skills on the strings (think - the full range of skills you see in a community band) coupled with the *best* "band" players that the strings can convince to play with them.
So, I wouldn't put too much stock in observations of these string player. You might as well listen to the average community band and conclude that all instruments are quite hard to play "even to a minimums standard".
