The orchestral pro tuba player spends a lot more time counting than playing.
I'd be willing to bet that on a note for note basis, the tuba player is quite likely the highest paid ($/note or $/beat played) in most orchestras (but I'm not suggesting that the average pro tuba player is very well paid in real dollars).
While it might be nice to be a tuba player by trade, there's nothing in the world wrong with being a plumber ! I'd also bet that some of the skills learned as a plumber (soldering for one) could be later modified and used apprenticing to a brass repairman !!
