Humor aside, it's really quite simple.

The BSO isn't paying enough.

They want to recruit from the top of the barrel. They want someone (not necessarily a particular person) who is already a top pro who meets their image of the Boston Symphony as a world-class orchestra. Only a true virtuoso young player would overcome that desire--someone they'd be able to brag about getting when all other orchestras wish they had done so.

For some reason, the best of the best aren't showing up. In private industry, when that happens, the offered salary goes up. It's really just that simple. They aren't paying enough to encourage the world-class orchestral tubists out there to move to Boston.

They think the reputation of their group is sufficient to overcome insufficient salary, but they are learning their error. What does it take to pull someone from a tenured position to be on probation for a year? Lots and lots of money, and many, many assurances.
