I've been going to the NYC Tuba Christmas for the past 7 years and have been taking one or both of my daughters (one normally a flutist, the other a trumpet player) for most of those years. And some of their friends who play tuba or euph. They play euph (treble clef) and we have a wonderful time. I've even been in the dreaded sousaphone line at the back with my 20K, doing my small part to make the low tuba part sound like music. While there are always a few kids who blast and blatt, and a few not-so-kids who do the same, my experience in NYC has always been that the comraderie and enjoyment of the audience make up for any technical musical failings.
