Heh, heh: "duel purpose".

If there was ever an inspired typo, that's it. The enjoyment of the folks that Joe wants to avoid is in dueling their buddies to see who can play the loudest. There is no interest in making music, just in making noise.

Too often, people define their enjoyment in entirely selfish terms, seeming to derive pleasure from the negative attention they earn from whoever they are trying to impress. Too often, this is called "just having a good time." Too often, those who complain about it are accused of being spoilsports. The notion of giving being more statisfying than receiving is at stake here. When we perform in an ensemble, we seek to contribute what we can to the overall sound. This is a gift to the audience, and their pleasure is our joy. When "me" comes into it, the formula fails and the joy diminishes for everyone. Those who attack Joe for complaining are not, in my opinion, showing Christmas spirit, which is, after all, a holiday celebrating the greatest gift ever given.
