AHA! A description of what I do.....what goes on here, in the terms I have figured out, is that the aperture is controlled from "outside" by pushing the upper lip up or the lower lip down. This is needed in the high range, to keep the aperture open while also squeezing it shut. The pressure is released for the low range. I'm a horn player, not a tubist (I can free buzz the tuba range, so haven't needed too much of this) but this is what I finally figured out (umpteen teachers never told me about it) on my own. It's nice to hear that it's at least one of the correct methods.

I have seen one very fine horn player perform, who had NO visible facial movement throughout his entire large range. I couldn't fathom how he was playing. It was like he had prehensile lips.
