I was the tubist in the New Haven Symphony for ten years, using a small BBb tuba. During that time I was asked to play more softly on several occasions, but was asked to play louder only once, by an assistant conductor rehearsing us for a kiddy concert. He was very polite, asking me if it would be possible to make more sound on a certain passage. On the next run I used both lungs and was promptly told "not that much, please". Do any of you have stories of conductors demanding more sound from the tuba?
