If you don't have access to a tuba, bass trombone is fine, but I think that tuba blends better and provides a fuller core to quintet music so it would be preferable.

I play a small BBb or an Eb tuba when I play in a quintet. I usually use the Eb if indoors and the BBb if outdoors. I think that a 3/4 to 4/4 size BBb or CC tuba would be fine. It really depends on what you are more comfortable with. If you played euphonium in the past using bass clef parts it would probably be easier to pick up a BBb horn because the fingerings will be the same.

There are many appropriate horns to choose from so if you can borrow one, whatever it is will probably work. If looking to acquire one, I like the Yamaha YBB621 for this type of playing, but that it a lot of money to spend for the occasional gig.
