Bruckner also suffered from extreme low self-esteem for most of his life. It's hard to tell what his original intentions were, since he was very suggestive and took criticism poorly. Bruckner 4, for example... there are several different versions of it, with some same movements in different versions completely rewritten...

There's no telling how many times his works were rewritten before they evolved into what we now know them as. Social disorders seem to be unfortunately common in what could potentially be some of the greatest composers.... Dukas, Sibelius, Bruckner... just think about how much of their ingenius musical creativity we're missing out on.
