Tradition reports that Bruckner spent the last 14 years of his life working on the Ninth Symphony, and yet never completed it. Often it is performed with the liturgical Te Deum "standing in" as the missing 4th movement. I suggest listening to a recording of the 9th some evening, alone, and without the te deum added on. When the music is over, ask yourself "what did Bruckner have in mind when he wrote?"
